About
Summary
The study of the indo-portuguese retable art is immerged in to a silence that is contributing not only to irrecoverable losses in art, but also to the erasing of a whole memory. This project goes to the encounter of that art, recovering from the existing remains information that will end up being lost. It is in this sense that is absolutely necessary to be face to face with the object of art so that all the information needed could be collected. To go on the encounter and be in the presence of the art allows an amplification of the primer knowledge building the bases for the concatenation of values for future research. In such a way the goal of this project will be reached – the study of the artistic relations between Portugal and India in the retable art. As a consequence of this study the creation of an artistic inventory of the indo-portuguese retable in the cities of the ancient North Province and Goa will be promoted.
Goals
This project intends to study the artistic relations between Portugal and India, thru the exhaustive study of the indo-portuguese retable art located in the territories of the ancient North Province and Goa. This study will focus essentially on the artistic miscegenation between Hindu artisans and the portuguese Christian demand, so that a coherent artistic platform could be established in such a way that the formal and iconographic comprehension of the indo-portuguese retables could be granted. The realization of an artistic inventory of the indo-portuguese retable of the ancient North Province and Goa will appear as a consequence of this project. The making of this investigation grants the preservation of the memory of the artistic encounters between portuguese and Hindus in an artistic expression of great importance and forgotten till now and incurs the risk of losing it.
